BULK CEMENT IN LUMUT MARITIME TERMINAL
Published: 30 Mar 2007
Lumut Maritime Terminal has begun handling a new product – export of cement in bulk in January 2006. The Shipper has chartered two (2) vessels of 19,000 tons and 10,000 tons deadweight, capable of carrying about 16,000 tons and 9,600 tons of bulk cement respectively. Their destination was Sri Lanka to supplement local cement production.
The bulk cement was trucked to the terminal by bulk cement road-tankers from the shipper’s plant and pneumatically pumped into the vessel. The vessels are specially designed and constructed with built-in pneumatic suctions pumps and can accommodate 16 road tankers loading into the vessels at any one time.
The distance between the plant and the terminal is about 85 km and the journey takes about 2 hours. Each tanker has a capacity of between 32 tons to 35 tons. Per day productivity was about 3000 tons to 3500 tons with 50 trucks. Collective efforts with the shipper are being implemented to improve productivity for faster turnaround of the vessel at berth.
To date the terminal has handled five (5) shipments totaling about 54,000 tons of bulk cement. The terminal is expected to handle 1-2 shipments a month until the end of year.
